Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011, codenamed “R8″

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011, codenamed “R8″

Today Microsoft announced what’s going to be in their next service update for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011, codenamed “R8″, under the headline: CRM Anywhere.

The R8 service update is expected to be available Q2 2011 and is built on six broad themes: Mobility, Browser Flexibility, Social, Industry Templates, SQL Server 2012, Certifications.

Mobility
Microsoft will be launching a new product, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Mobile, which will enable CRM Online, partner-hosted and on-premise customers with Internet-facing deployments to use CRM on up to three devices per user.

There will be native clients, which means offline support, on all the main mobile platforms: Windows Phone 7.5, iPhone & iPad, Android, BlackBerry. I haven’t seen any of the licensing details yet, but I understand that this is a subscription service (even for on-premise customers) for $30 per user per month.

Browser Flexibility
For years prospective customers have been crying out for multi-browser support and Microsoft has finally delivered! Once R8 hits your CRM server you’ll be able to access CRM using: Internet Explorer 7 or above on Windows 7, Vista and XP; Safari 5.1.1 or above on Mac OS-X or iOS5 ;Firefox 6 or above on Windows 7, Vista and XP or Mac OS-X or iOS5; Chrome 13 or above on Windows 7, Vista and XP.

Activity Feed Enhancements
In the Nov 2011 service update (codenamed “R7″) Microsoft released the new Activity Feeds feature which introduced some social enterprise features into CRM 2011. R8 introduces a series of enhancements to the Activity Feeds feature: like/dislike, enhanced filtering (e.g. @me, types of records I follow, record views), and an updated mobile activity feeds client for Windows Phone 7.5.

Industry Templates
Building on the work of Microsoft partners and its own consulting team, the Dynamics Labs will be releasing several industry templates into the Dynamics Marketplace. The first few templates will be: Wealth Management, Non-Profit, Health Sales Plans
Relationship Management for Health.

The templates will include data model customizations, dashboards, workflows and sample data. They’re designed to help customers in those industries visualise how Dynamics CRM can help their business, and speed up an implementation without necessarily being a fully-packaged vertical industry product.

SQL Server 2012
Microsoft’s own data centers have already been upgraded to SQL Server 2012 and the R8 service update bring official support for partners and customers wanting to upgrade their own deployments to SQL Server 2012. Additionally, there will be some new CRM features that make use of SQL Server 2012 new capabilities. For example: performance improvements, enhanced database recovery, next generation business intelligence (“Crescent”) such as pre-defined Power Pivot models, Power View reports, and time-animated reports.

Certifications
Certifications are critical to enterprise adoption and Microsoft has been working hard over the last year to ensure that its data centers and CRM Online service meets several important certification standards including: ISO27001, SAS 70 Type II, SOX, SSAE 16 SOC1, Safe Harbor, Data Processing Agreement, EU Model Clauses and HIPAA compliance (supported through Business Partner Agreements).

Dynamics CRM 2011: Rename an Organization

Dynamics CRM 2011 : Rename an Organization

Step by Step Guide.

Here are Step by Step guide to renaming an Organization in CRM 2011.

Open the CRM 2011 Deployment Manager then select the Organizations node.  The list of organizations should look something like this:
rename-org-1
1. Highlight the selected Organization the click the Disable link.
You will be prompted to confirm that you wish to disable the organization:
image
2.  Select Yes.
Note: Remember that a Disabled organization can’t be accessed.
3. Click the Edit Organization link:
image
and the Edit Organization Wizard will be displayed:
image
You will notice that you can’t edit the Name field.  That’s the physical name of the CRM Organizational database and that can’t be changed once it’s created.
You can however, change the following:
  • Display Name
  • SQL Server
  • SQL Server Reporting Services URL
In this exercise, we’ll just be changing the Display Name.
4. Change the Display name field to the new name.
image
5. Click Next and the standard installation environmental checks:
image
Assuming you don’t encounter any errors, then click the Next button and you will be asked to perform one last verification before proceeding:
image
6. Click the Apply button.  The changes will be applied and again, assuming you don’t encounter any issues, you’ll see the following dialog:
image
7. Click the Finish button.
Back in the organization list, you will see the change you just made:
rename-org-2
8. The last step is to highlight the organization and click the Enable link to enable the newly changed CRM organization.

Conclusion

As you can see from the following figure, you’ll notice that the URL for the organization remains the same, but the Display Name has been changed:
image

Let me know if you have any issue in this.

Imran

Reporting Services (SRS) Client-Side Printing Issue

Reporting Services Client-Side Printing and Silent Deployment of RSClientPrint.cab ActiveX file.

RSClientPrint.cab is a Microsoft ActiveX control that provides client side printing for Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services reports.
The ActiveX control displays a custom print dialog box that supports common features with other print dialog boxes. The client-side print dialog box includes a printer list for selection, print preview option, page margin settings, orientation, etc.
Downloading and installing the ActiveX control RSClientPrint.cab requires administrator permissionson the client machine.
If a user runs a SQL Server Reporting Services report and if the toolbar is displayed, the user can click on the print buttons seen on the right side of the toolbar.
ms sql server reporting services toolbar
If the print command is being run for the report server by that user's client machine then the client request the RSClientPrint.cab download from the related Report Server. While downloading the ActiveX software the browser will promt the user whether the software will be installed or not considering the security issues. Again, it is necessary to note that administration permissions are required for downloading and installing the rsclientprint ActiveX. For RSClientPrint install, RSClientPrint.cab download is the first step in installing the ActiveX on IE browser.
install RS Client Print activex for reporting services print option

After the installation of the RSClientPrint is successfully done, the Print dialog box is displayed as shown below. You will realize that the Print options is very similar to standart Print dialog boxes that run on Windows systems including preview, number of copies, print range, printer selecting from available printers, etc.
sql reporting services print dialog box
Print Preview option for the Reporting Services report.
sql reporting services print preview with rsclientprint activex

rsclientprint.cab and rsclientprint install

In most companies the Information Technology policies do not grant the admin privileges to the end users. So the end users running on the client computers can not download and install the ActiveX print client file RSClientPrint.cab.
So it is a need for the IT departments to distribute this client side printing ActiveX control in order to support their clients to work with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) without a problem.
You can find the file rsclientprint.cab on the Report Server bin folder. The Reporting Services Report Server folder can be on
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin folder for SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services and
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin folder for SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services.
Actually for SQL Server 2005, the installation folder may vary due to the installed components of the SQL Server 2005. You can also find the ReportServer bin folder by openning the IIS Manager and then exploring the ReportServer (if installed with default settings) virtual directory.
Microsoft SQL Report Server and iis
If you extract the contents of the RSClientPrint.cab file you will see that the .cab file consists of the following files.
gdiplus.dll
RSClientPrint.dll
RSClientPrint.inf
RSClientPrint_1028.rll
RSClientPrint_1031.rll
RSClientPrint_1033.rll
RSClientPrint_1036.rll
RSClientPrint_1040.rll
RSClientPrint_1041.rll
RSClientPrint_1042.rll
RSClientPrint_1043.rll
RSClientPrint_1046.rll
RSClientPrint_1053.rll
RSClientPrint_2052.rll
RSClientPrint_3082.rll

For a silent deployment of RSClientPrint.cab, you only need to distribute RSClientPrint.dll file and the .rll files.
If you copy the files listed below under the folder C:\WINNT\system32 for client computers.
RSClientPrint.dll
RSClientPrint_1028.rll
RSClientPrint_1031.rll
RSClientPrint_1033.rll
RSClientPrint_1036.rll
RSClientPrint_1040.rll
RSClientPrint_1041.rll
RSClientPrint_1042.rll
RSClientPrint_1043.rll
RSClientPrint_1046.rll
RSClientPrint_1053.rll
RSClientPrint_2052.rll
RSClientPrint_3082.rll
Register the RSClientPrint.dll dll file by running the regsvr32.exe command on the command prompt shown as below.
c:\regsvr32.exe /s
c:\winnt\system32 \rsclientprint.dll

So, if a script or an MSI file that copies the listed files above and registers the rsclientprint.dll will be enough to deploy the Reporting Services Client Side Printing functionality.

SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services on Windows 7 RSClientPrint.cab ActiveX file

Windows 7 has been released and SQL administrators and BI developers can start working on SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 with its one of Business Intelligence (BI) components Reporting Services.
What is changed for SQL2008 SSRS is that the default bin folder of the ReportServer 2008 where new RSClientPrint-x86.cab, RSClientPrint-x64.cab or RSClientPrint-ia64.cab ActiveX file download can be found at :
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin
If you are working on Windows 7 with MS SQL Server 2008, you can review the contents of the new RSClientPrint.cab file downloads.

Questions about Rollup Updates / HotFixes in Dynamics CRM 4

This article answers common questions about Microsoft Dynamics CRM Update Rollups.

  1. HideWhat is an update rollup?
An update rollup is a collection of software updates for a particular Microsoft Dynamics CRM application.
Each update package file uses the form CRM_version-KBNumber-platform-application-Language.exe. For example, the following list describes the update rollup 3 package files for the English version.
    • CRMv4.0-KB961768-amd64-Router-ENU.exe. Microsoft Dynamics CRM E-mail Router update rollup package for x64-bit editions.
    • CRMv4.0-KB961768-amd64-Server-ENU.exe. Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server update rollup package for x64-bit editions.
    • CRMv4.0-KB961768-amd64-SRS-ENU.exe. Microsoft Dynamics CRM Connector for Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services update rollup package for x64-bit editions.
    • CRMv4.0-KB961768-i386-Client-ENU.exe. Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook update rollup package.
    • CRMv4.0-KB961768-i386-DMClient-ENU.exe. Data Migration Manager update rollup package.
    • CRMv4.0-KB961768-i386-Router-ENU.exe. E-mail Router update rollup package for 32-bit editions.
    • CRMv4.0-KB961768-i386-Server-ENU.exe. Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server update rollup package for 32-bit editions.
    • CRMv4.0-KB961768-i386-SRS-ENU.exe. Microsoft Dynamics CRM Connector for Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services update rollup package for 32-bit editions.
  2. HideShould I apply the latest update rollup to my deployment?
In most situations we recommend that you apply the latest update rollup. Microsoft fully tests and supports installing any update rollup for Microsoft Dynamics CRM at the time of its release. If issues arise after the release of a Microsoft Dynamics CRM update rollup, Microsoft will work to address the issue as quickly as possible. For help and support contact information, see Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Help and Support.
  3. HideWhat preventative actions should I take before I apply an update rollup?
Before you apply an update rollup, we recommend that you follow these steps:
    1. If you plan to import customizations that were exported from a Microsoft Dynamics CRM server that was running a previous rollup, review the "Notes about exporting and importing customizations" section of the corresponding update rollup Microsoft Knowledge Base article for limitations.
    2. Back up the computer where you are applying the update rollup. Notice that you must back up the Web.config file if the file has been customized or those customizations will be overwritten. For more information about this issue, seeYou have to manually modify the Web.config file after you install or remove a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 hotfix or update rollup.
  4. HideDoes an update rollup require additional configuration after I install it?
Some of the individual updates may require a Windows registry modification or require you to run a script to complete. For information about additional configuration that may be required after you install an update rollup, see the "Hotfixes and updates that you have to enable or configure manually" section of the corresponding update rollup Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
  5. HideAre the update rollups cumulative?
Yes, update rollups are cumulative. This means that the problems that are fixed in an update rollup are also fixed in later update rollups. For example, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server Update Rollup 3 contains all the fixes that are included in Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server Update Rollup 2.
  6. HideDo I need to apply the previous update rollup before I can apply a later one?
No, because update rollups are cumulative. For more information, see the answer in the previous question in this topic.
  7. HideHow frequently can I expect a new update rollup to be released?
The Microsoft Dynamics CRM Sustained Engineering team is committed to releasing update rollups approximately every 8 weeks. For more information about this policy, see Blog post: Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Update Rollup Schedule.
  8. HideHow can I get notified when an update has been released?
If you want to know when updates have been released for Microsoft Dynamics CRM, you can sign up to receive e-mail notifications. Notifications may include information on security updates, updates to Microsoft Dynamics CRM that address feature requests from customers, or the release of a new version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM. There are two ways to accomplish this. From a computer that is running a Microsoft Dynamics CRM client application:
    1. In the Navigation Pane, click Settings, click Administration, and then click Product Updates.
    2. In the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Product Updates form, sign in to the Windows Live ID service.
    3. Select the Subscribe box, confirm your e-mail format, e-mail address, and privacy options, and then click Continue.
Alternatively, you can go directly to the subscription Web page at Microsoft Dynamics CRM Product Updates.
  9. HideIn what order should I apply an update rollup?
All server roles or server role groups must have the same update rollup applied within the same period of time before going live. Similarly, if you have Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server installed on multiple computers, such as a Network Load Balanced (NLB) configuration, the nodes in the NLB cluster must all be updated before they are brought back online. A mixed deployment of Microsoft Dynamics CRM servers or server roles that are running different update rollup versions is not supported.
Generally, Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook clients will function correctly when connecting to a Microsoft Dynamics CRM server in the following update rollup deployment configurations:
    • Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook computers with a previous update rollup than the server, which is running the next update rollup. For example, Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook Update Rollup 2 connecting to Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server Update Rollup 3.
    • Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook computers with a later update rollup than the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server, which is running the earlier update rollup. For example, Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook Update Rollup 3 connecting to Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server Update Rollup 2.
Notice that, for the best experience we recommend that you apply the update rollups on the clients as soon as possible to be consistent with the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server system.
  10. HideHow can I automatically deploy an update rollup?
You can configure an update rollup to be automatically deployed on computers that are running Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook. More information about this is available in the following resources.
  11. HideWhat is a PatchId?
An update rollup identifier or PatchId is a globally unique identifier that must be entered into the Patch Configuration Tool XML configuration file to validate and apply a specific Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook update rollup. The PatchId can be found in the patchid element in the config.xml file that is included in an update rollup. To extract the update rollup files so that you can view the config.xml file, at a command prompt use the /x option, such as the CRMv4.0-KB961768-i386-Client-ENU.exe /x.
  12. HideHow can I avoid having my system restart right after I apply an update rollup for Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook?
To avoid a system restart after you apply an update rollup, follow these steps.
    1. Before starting the update rollup application process, in Microsoft Office Outlook click Options on the CRM menu. On the General tab, clear the Always run the Host process check box and then click OK.
    2. Apply the update rollup. During the installation, close Outlook. If you see any "File in use" errors, click Retry when the Outlook and the CRM hoster process shutdown is completed.
    3. You must restart Outlook to use Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook.
  13. HideHow can I check my computer to see if an update rollup has been applied?
There are two ways to see if an update rollup has been applied:
    • Click Start, open Control Panel, open Programs and Features, in the left pane click View installed updates and look for Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server in the list.
      Note
For Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 computers use similar steps to start Add or Remove Programs.
    • View the details of a binary file in the drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics CRM\Server folder, such as CrmVerServer.dll. To do this, right-click the file, click Properties, click the Version tab, and view the file version.
      Tip
To find the version number and release date of an update rollup without installing it, see the following:
On the update rollup download page on the Microsoft Download Center, the version number is displayed next to Version under the Quick Details area. Similarly, the date the update rollup was released is next to Date Published.
Below is a table that includes a few of the past update rollup builds and release dates.
